In August, a press release announced that ‘Sengoku Youko‘ (Warring States Youko), the manga written and illustrated by Satoshi Mizukami, will be adapted into an anime, set to release on January 11th, 2024. The same release also mentioned that the series will feature three story arcs, each in its respective broadcast quarter, adapting the entire content of the manga. However, there was no mention of whether these arcs would be broadcast consecutively.
The animation is being handled by WHITE FOX studios, with Masahiro Aizawa (Date A Live II, Jigoku Shoujo, Hakyuu Houshin Engi) as the director, Jukki Hanada (Steins;Gate, No Game No Life, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!) overseeing script writing and supervision, EVAN CALL (Violet Evergarden, Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon, Kono Yo no Hate de Koi wo Utau Shoujo YU-NO) composing the soundtrack, and Yousuke Okuda (Blend S, Gochuumon wa Usagi desu ka?, Kunoichi Tsubaki no Mune no Uchi) in charge of character design and animation direction.
The voice cast known to date includes:
- Ryouhei Kimura as Shinsuke Hyoudou.
- Hiroki Nanami as Senya.
- Yuuki Takada as Tama Youko.
- Souma Saitou as Jinka Yamato.
- Tomoyo Kurosawa as Shakugan.
- Maaya Uchida as Tsukiko.
The manga began publication in December 2007 by Mizukami, in the Monthly Comic Blade magazine of the Mag Garden publishing label, which later in 2014 became an online magazine titled Online Magazine Comic Blade. By its conclusion in 2016, the manga had 17 compiled volumes published.
Are you familiar with the story of ‘Sengoku Youko’?
Well, if not, here’s a quick overview: In a world divided into two clear factions, humans on one side, and the fearsome monsters called Katawara on the other, we meet Tama, a very special Katawara who loves humans so much that she vows to protect them from all harm, even if it means fighting against her own kind. On the other hand, her brother Jinka hates humans, though one might say he’s almost one of them. Joining these siblings is a somewhat cowardly swordsman named Shinsuke, who wishes to learn to be strong and fearless.
At one point, the group uncovers a plot to experiment on humans, leading them through a horrifying transformation that would turn them into monsters. Together, they swear to confront and defeat whoever is behind such schemes, even if it means challenging an entire army of warriors. Eventually, during this epic journey, they will meet peculiar characters and visit unique places, facing increasingly powerful enemies.
Their adventure will turn them into legends!
Tell us, did you already know the story of ‘Sengoku Youko‘? Personally, I find myself captivated from the beginning by the premise of two great factions in conflict, one of them being humans, and especially since our point of view in the story’s narration is precisely that other side that poses a threat to humanity… Which side would you like to be on? Would you join Tama and her friends? Or would you be a valiant human defending your species? Think about it for a moment and then leave us your answer in the comments!
See you! 🙂
