February of this year marks an important milestone: the first anniversary since the announcement of the continuation of the acclaimed anime “Lycoris Recoil,” under the direction of Shingo Adachi and production by A-1 Pictures. Despite the lack of concrete details since its announcement, the series continues to enjoy a solid following among fans.
Interest was reignited recently thanks to an unintended revelation by Shunsuke Sugimoto, an employee at A-1 Pictures. Responding to a fan who congratulated the studio for its adaptations of “MASHLE: Magic And Muscles” and “Solo Leveling,” Sugimoto commented that the new “Lycoris Recoil” project is actually a movie. His tweet, which was quickly deleted, read: “Licorice has a new animated film in the works. Please look forward to it! You will surely see something interesting.” This oversight has been interpreted as a leak, sparking speculation about whether the project will be a direct sequel or a prequel.
“Lycoris Recoil” premiered in the summer season of 2022 (July to September) in Japan and consisted of thirteen episodes. The series was distributed in the West by Crunchyroll and quickly achieved great success in physical sales, exceeding twenty thousand copies sold with each release, becoming the series with the highest volume of sales in its first week during the year 2022.

- Shingo Adachi, known for his work on “Sword Art Online” and “Working!!“, leads the direction of the anime at A-1 Pictures.
- Muru Imigi, with credits in “Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!” and “Make Heroine ga Oosugiru!“, is responsible for character design.
- The original story was written by Asaura, author of “Ben-To” and “TiN-So: Kimi ga Te ni Suru Ore no Ex Machina.”
- Kimika Onai, costume designer for groups like Nogizaka46 and Sakurazaka46, took care of the anime’s uniform design.
Summary of Lycoris Recoil’s Plot
The series revolves around a Japan with minimal terrorist acts, thanks to the efforts of Direct Attack (DA), an organization that trains orphans as assassins under the name “Lycoris“. The protagonist, Takina Inoue, a Lycoris known for her firm determination and meticulousness, faces a turning point after a hostage situation that results in her act of defiance to authority, leading her to be reassigned outside of the DA. Reluctant to accept her new reality, Takina arrives at LycoReco, a covert café.
In this new environment, Takina meets Chisato Nishikigi, another Lycoris, whose carefree attitude and focus on humanitarian missions contrast with Takina‘s expectations. The enigmatic Chisato, capable of neutralizing armed attackers without resorting to lethal violence, challenges Takina‘s convictions, who yearns to return to the DA. Through her experiences with Chisato, Takina begins to question the true essence of her existence and the value of life beyond her orders.
