Production and Voices

The studio CloverWorks is behind the animated production of this trapezium movie with Masahiro Shinohara directing and Koji Masunari overseeing the film. Yuuko Kakihara (The Apothecary Diaries, Buddy Daddies) wrote the screenplay, while Rio (Sorcerous Stabber Orphen -Chaos in Urbanrama-) handled the character design, and Masaru Yokoyama (Farewell, My Dear Cramer: The Movie, Fruits Basket -prelude-, Horimiya) composed the music. The movie also features the musical theme “Nanmonai feat. Hoshimachi Suisei, sakuma“, performed by VTuber Hoshimachi Suisei and composed by MAISONdes.

As for the cast, Asaki Yuikawa voices the protagonist Yu Higashi in the movie, while Hina Yomiya voices Kurumi Taiga, the “Star of the West“. Reina Ueda voices Ranko Katori, the “Star of the South“, and Haruka Aikawa will voice Mika Kamei, the “Star of the North“, one of Yu Higashi‘s former classmates from elementary school. Additionally, cast members Asaki Yuikawa, Hina Yomiya, Reina Ueda, and Haruka Aikawa will perform the song titled “Hōi Jishin“. Kazumi Takayama, the author of the novel, also wrote the lyrics for the song, which appears in the original novel itself. Masaru Yokoyama, who also handles the music for the movie, composed the song. The cast will also perform another song in the movie titled “Naritai Jibun“.

Takayama, a former first-generation member of the idol group Nogizaka46, serialized the novel “trapezium” in Media Factory‘s Da Vinci magazine between 2016 and 2018. Kadokawa published the novel in November 2018.

Synopsis

The anime movie “trapezium“, premiering tomorrow in Japan, offers a touching story based on Kazumi Takayama‘s novel. It follows Yu Higashi, a young woman determined to become an idol. She sets strict rules: avoid social media, have no boyfriend, keep a low profile at school, and cultivate friendships from different regions: north, south, east, and west. These rules reflect her dedication and the sacrifices made to pursue her passion for music and stardom.

The focus of this work is to reveal the less glamorous realities of the path to fame. It promises a deep and realistic view of the life of idols, moving away from the typical glamorous image associated with this industry. Inspired by Takayama‘s experiences as a former idol of the Nogizaka46 group, the narrative has an authentic and personal foundation.

In addition to Yu‘s desire to reach stardom, the movie explores the complexities and challenges she faces. By interacting with other aspiring idols, it addresses themes of friendship, rivalry, and the emotional cost of pursuing big dreams in a relentless industry. This focus on personal relationships and sacrifices offers a rich narrative that seeks to resonate deeply with the audience, presenting an intimate portrait of perseverance and challenges that define youth in search of recognition.

The movie “trapezium” will premiere in just a few hours in Japanese cinemas, so it won’t be long until we can see it in the West. In the meantime, we invite you to leave your thoughts on this fresh idea in the comments. And as always, we’ll be reading! 😉
