November 28, 2023

In a press release, it was finally confirmed that the manga Dandadan, written and illustrated by Yakinobu Tatsu, will receive its much-awaited anime adaptation, set to premiere at some point in 2024 in Japan. The same release also announced that Science SARU studios will be in charge of the animation, although nothing is yet known about the voice cast.

“Thank you very much for turning Dandadan into an anime. I have always been impressed by the work of Science SARU and the current voice actors, whose voices I’ve heard in popular works, and having them work on Dandadan is a dream come true. I am very grateful. I hope that together we can make Dandadan even more exciting. I am looking forward to working with all of you,”

These were the words of Yokinobu Tatsu regarding this production.

Tatsu began the publication through Shueisha‘s digital service Shonen Jump Plus in April 2021, and it continues to be serialized to date. Yokinobu Tatsu is also the author of other serialized works, such as Seigi no Rokugou and Fire Ball!, as well as some one-shots like Renai Saibaihou from 2015, and Yamada Kiki Ippatsu from 2019.

Here’s a look at some of the production team:

  • Fuuga Yamashiro (Yojouhan Time Machine Blues, Inu-ou, Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!) will be directing at Science SARU studios.
  • Naoyuki Onda (PSYCHO-PASS, Ergo Proxy, Inuyashiki) will be in charge of animation direction and character design.
  • Yoshimichi Kameda (One Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100, Space☆Dandy) will specifically design the monsters.
  • Hiroshi Seko (Shingeki no Kyojin, Jujutsu Kaisen, Mob Psycho 100) will be responsible for scriptwriting and supervision.
  • Kensuke Ushio (Koe no Katachi, Chainsaw Man, DEVILMAN Crybaby) will be composing the soundtrack.

But… What is Dandadan about?

Dandadan is a “supernatural occultist love and battle comedy” featuring high school girl Momo Ayase, a descendant of a family of spiritual mediums. Momo, having been aggressively rejected, is angry when she stumbles upon a boy being harassed. Saved by her reckless kindness, the boy, obsessed with the occult, strikes up a conversation with her about UFOs, an interest he believes they share. She dismisses his claims, declaring herself a believer in ghosts, leading to a debate about what is real and what is not.

The boy, named Ken Takakura, and Momo Ayase make a bet to determine who is right. They decide to visit places associated with both aspects of the supernatural separately. As soon as they reach their respective destinations, they discover they were both right all along, marking the start of Momo and Ken‘s adventure (who coincidentally shares the name with Momo‘s favorite idol) and their journey together facing each supernatural event that comes their way, aiming to someday return to a “normal” life.

Tell us, what do you think of Dandadan? Would you join Momo and Ken on their adventure? Would you really want to return to a “normal” life after such thrills? Come on, respond in the comments. We’ll be reading! 😉
