The first season of “Blue Lock” was also broadcast on Japanese television between October 2022 and March 2023, and had a total of 24 episodes, which were transmitted to other countries through the Crunchyroll platform. Added to this, the movie “Blue Lock: Episode Nagi,” which adapts the spin-off focused on the character Seishiro Nagi, premiered in Japanese cinemas on April 19th. This film was also released in July in various Western countries with their respective subtitles and dubbing.

Tetsuaki Watanabe (Powerful Pro Yakyū Powerful Kōkō-hen) directed the series for studio 8-Bit with Shunsuke Ishikawa as assistant director. Alongside them, Taku Kishimoto (Haikyu!!, Silver Spoon) was in charge of the script, while the original author, Muneyuki Kaneshiro, supervised the story. In addition, Yutaka Uemura (Saga of Tanya the Evil) was the conceptual advisor, while Masaru Shindō (Fruits Basket) took care of character design and served as the chief animation director together with Kenji Tanabe (Binbougami ga!) and Kento Toya (Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld). The soundtrack was composed by Jun Murayama.

Blue Lock” is a spokon (sports-themed anime) written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yūsuke Nomura that began publishing in August 2018 weekly in Kodansha‘s Weekly Shōnen Magazine. The work has 29 compilation volumes to date in the Japanese market and was awarded in 2021 as Best Shōnen in the 45th edition of the Kodansha Manga Awards.

Additionally, Muneyuki Kaneshiro also wrote the spin-off “Blue Lock: Episode Nagi” with drawings, this time, by Kota Sannomiya. The work began its serialization on June 9, 2022, in the magazine Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine and currently has 4 compilation volumes.

The plot of “Blue Lock” in the anime focuses on a radical vision of soccer proposed by coach Jinpachi Ego, whose goal is to transform Japanese soccer by creating the best striker in the world through an extremely competitive and unconventional program. The story follows Yoichi Isagi, a player who, after losing the opportunity to take his school team to the national tournament by opting for a pass instead of scoring, is invited to join this program called Blue Lock. This program gathers 300 of the most promising young forwards in Japan in a prison-like facility where they must compete among themselves, and the only survivor will be crowned as the best forward and potential savior of Japanese soccer.

Throughout the anime, participants not only face soccer matches, but also psychological and physical challenges that test their limits and determination. Isagi, seeing others initially as potential friends, is forced to embrace a more selfish part of himself to excel and survive in the program. As each player fights for their dreams and personal goals, the anime explores their developments and internal conflicts, highlighting how each manages the pressure of having to eliminate their peers to not lose their own chance of success.
